Museums in Shanghai

By Lainey | April 22, 2007

Shanghai has a proud collection of museums for all purposes. Here are some of the most notable ones. When visiting museums, don’t forget to bring your student ID, if you have one. As in all museums, students get discounts.

Shanghai Urban Planning Museum
100 Renmin Avenue, Shanghai
86-21-6372-2077

This is my favorite museum in Shanghai, located right outside Metro Line 1 and 2 People’s Square stop. It is an art and history museum focusing on Shanghai’s architecture and civil works. It starts with the first two floors providing an account of the history of the city and how the buildings and central areas came about. On the third floor is the highlight of the museum, where you will find a mini replica of Shanghai spanning the entire floor. The replica is a beauty which can absorb your for at least a full 30 minutes. The remaining floors then give you a sneak peak at the future developments of Shanghai, the new cities being built, the highways being constructed. It is urban planning at its finest. Entrance fee is about 32 RMB.

Shanghai Art Museum
325 West Nanjing Road, Shanghai

I have never actually been to the Shanghai Art Museum. But it is located right a few establishments by Shanghai Urban Planning Museum. So if you are in the area and you like art, try visiting this place. It is the European deco style building with a clock on top. While in the museum, you can also stop by to have lunch or coffee at Kathleen’s Five, which is a restaurant with a great view of People’s Park.

Shanghai Museum
201 Renmin Da Dao Road, Shanghai
86-21-63723500

This is the main museum of Shanghai, also located in the same cultural road as the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum and Shanghai Art Museum. I heard that this place is interesting. (Can you tell that I am not much of a museum person?)

Shanghai History Museum
260 Yanan Dong Road, Huangpu, Shanghai
86-21-63213548

This is slightly off of the People’s Square museum area, and somewhere towards Nanjing East Road and the Bund. Again, I have never been here, but I know that it is about 5 blocks walk away from the Metro Line 2 Nanjing East Station. I know that it is a fairly old museum, having been first opened in 1956. It is filled with stuffed animals and fossils. Entrance fee is about 5 RMB.

Science and Technology Museum
2000 Century Avenue, Pudong near Jinxiu Lu
世纪大道2000号,近锦绣路
86-21-68622000

This is a world-class and spanking new Science and Technology Museum located in Pudong. Getting here is pretty accessible, because there is a direct Metro Line 2 stop that goes to Science and Technology Museum. I’ve only been in the lobby, and the place impresses me as it is from outside. The entrance fee is 60 RMB for adults and 45 RMB for children.

Shanghai Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum
68 Nanjing Xi Lu, Shanghai
86-21-63587878

Only the 6th Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum in the world, this museum opened just last year and has been a hit. It has over 70 wax figures including that of Yao Ming, the NBA basketball player who hails from Shanghai. The entrance fee is about 125 RMB.
